Bean Fairbanks – Seattle, WA

Art improves my physical, emotional, and cognitive health. I don’t have “a style” because learning new things is important to healing my wounded brain. I create in many different styles and with a variety of media. My big “aha” moment was discovering I could paint with alcohol ink using cotton balls, straws, and hair dryers. As my confidence grew, so did my work with traditional art materials. From being someone terrified of picking up a brush with my shaky hands and terrible vision, now I’m an artist that occasionally sells my work. I recently won two scholarships to Seattle art academies, where I focused on developing accommodations for the disabled, using different media. As I learn more modifications (I paint with my arm suspended in a sling on the end of a fishing pole attached to my wheelchair!) I am sharing that knowledge with schools and non-profits to make art creation more accessible.
