Sometime we need to escape from the things in our life that are beyond our control. Painting has become my escape. Through art classes, I discovered a way to express myself in a positive way.

I felt loss of control in my life when I was first diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1988. Over the years the disease has left me with limited mobility on my left side. At times, I felt like a prisoner in my own body, and everything seemed so hopeless.

I was living in a nursing home near my son and grandchildren in upstate NY. My hope returned when I moved to Hawaii with my sister, Edith. Edith helped me to get connected with therapy at the Nuuanu Clinic. My mobility improved tremendously and the door opened to the art program.

More than just being a means of escape, the art program has enriched my life. I made new friends and found meaning to life. Being a volunteer and helping others has given me a sense of accomplishment. I am very grateful to REHAB and the Louis Vuitton Creative Arts program for providing the opportunity to once again have a voice, a future and hope.
