I was always artistic, but after high school I got focused on “more adult endeavors.” I was diagnosed in 1998 at the age of 43, and the primary symptoms were tingling and weakness in my hands. My wife suggested I get back into art and take classes at our local art museum. I liked the idea of working in three dimensions, and seeing how the clay felt in my hands. As a psychotherapist transitioning into life coaching, being centered was important, and making pottery on the wheel required centering the clay, mostly by feel. I loved the feeling of the soft clay, and centering clay into cups or bowls. Many pieces later, I wanted to shift into sculpture and see what the soft clay and my hands wanted to create. Since then, I’ve created everything from urns for friends (still living) to my wife’s head! I’m sharing three favorites.
