Susan Bloom – Plainwell, MI

I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1996, which allowed my life to take a new direction. Unable to return to work or school, I began oil painting in 2000. I am self-taught. My focus is largely on wildlife to increase awareness of the conservation of animals and their habitats. Along with wildlife, I paint various topics, including landscapes, domestic animals, still life, and, of course, dogs. My painting, “Good Stewards of the Earth” (5-foot by 6-foot oil on canvas), depicts over 90 endangered species and the “ghosts” of around 20 extinct species. “Lunch” is a 9” by 12” oil on canvas of a sea otter about to enjoy his starfish. “Refuge” is a 16’ by 20” oil on canvas of an eagle taking refuge from an incoming storm. I look forward to painting. It is a gift from God and soothes my soul. I say I have a love/hate relationship with MS because I hate what it has taken from me, but really love that it has given me art.
