Research also suggests that music can benefit our physical and mental health in numerous ways. \n\n\n\nDuring our “Enjoy the Beat” program\, MS specialist Dr. Augusto Miravalle and MS advocate Brittany Quiroz explore how the brain and music work in harmony and discuss the importance of brain health. \n\n\n\nAbout the Presenters\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAugusto Miravalle\, MD\, FAAN is the Chief of the MS and Neuroimmunology Division as well as Associate Professor of Neurology at Rush University in Chicago. In addition to her duties as a professor at the nursing school and various research endeavors with the US Network of Pediatric MS Centers\, she has been a nurse practitioner at the UAB’s Center for Pediatric Onset Demyelinating Disease for nearly 18 years where she cares for children and their families with MS and other demyelinating diseases. Dr. Wheeler is a longtime volunteer and patient advocate and has collaborated with organizations like MSAA to ensure that patients and their families receive quality and equitable care no matter their age\, sex\, gender\, race\, or sexual orientation. He earned his medical degree from Universidad Autonoma de Tamaulipas in Mexico and completed a research fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology at the University of Houston. He later finished his neurology residency at LSU Health in New Orleans\, where he served as Chief Resident\, followed by a fellowship in neuroimmunology and MS at UT Austin. Dr. Cruz currently serves as the Director of the MS Center at DHR Health and Co-Chair of Neuroscience. He also sits on MSAA’s Hispanic/Latinx Advisory Board \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n

Diagnosed with MS in 2009\, she now provides lifestyle and preventive care consultations to others with MS. Her award-winning memoir\, Up the Down Escalator: Medicine\, Motherhood\, and Multiple Sclerosis\, was published in 2023 and chronicles her journey with MS as a mother and doctor turned patient. She is also one of MSAA’s Art Showcase artists for 2024. \n\n\n\nKimberly Carter\, MD\, MPP is an assistant professor at the Dell Medical School Department of Women’s Health. Dr. Carter is also an active member on several professional committees and currently serves as the Co-Chair of the Texas Medical Association Select Committee on Medicaid\, CHIP\, and the Uninsured and also the Co-Chair of the Task Force on Health Care Coverage\, among many others.

DESCRIPTION:MSAA invites you to join us for Improving Lives Through Art®\, a series of virtual fundraising events highlighting art as a way of therapeutic expression and connection. \n\n\n\nBlack History Month: Horace Pippin\n\n\n\nIn honor of Black History Month\, this virtual art tour will focus on Horace Pippin\, an African American army veteran who\, after being wounded in World War I\, discovered a passion for art and used it as a coping mechanism for both his physical injuries and psychological trauma. Though he was mostly self-taught\, his art is now featured in museums around the world. \n\n\n\nArt expert and docent at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia\, Joe Caliva\, will return once again to highlight the works by Pippin featured at the Barnes Foundation and from other museums as well. \n\n\n\nJoe Caliva

DESCRIPTION:Join MSAA and certified neurologist and MS specialist Dr. Heidi Crayton as we celebrate Black History Month and honor the strives of Black individuals living and thriving today. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter \n\n\n\nHeidi Crayton\, MD is a board-certified neurologist with a specialty in multiple sclerosis. She grew up in Los Angeles but came east to attend medical school at the Medical College of Pennsylvania. Dr. Crayton established the MS Center of Greater Washington in 2007\, the only full-time nonacademic MS center in the mid-Atlantic region. She has been a principal investigator in clinical trials for MS therapeutics and has been involved with developing a treatment algorithm for symptom management in MS. Dr. Crayton is also a member of MSAA’s Healthcare Advisory Council and African American Advisory Board.
